Outstanding Award

October 19th 2021

We've been a bit quiet on the blog lately... this past year has been our busiest, and we've been running to catch up at Polycrub HQ, but we're delighted to welcome so many new Polycrubbers.

Our staff numbers have recently increased to lighten the load, and we were delighted to hear a few weeks ago that we had been one of thirty-five companies awarded a Best Practice award in the Vibes Awards. Vibes recognises the work of companies to reduce environmental impacts and carbon emissions.

This would have been recognition enough for us, but we were then thrilled to find out that we were one of twelve companies to be put forward for an Outstanding Achievement award. Today, at an online ceremony, we were ower da moon to receive an Outstanding Achievement award!

The Polycrub Team L to R. Back Row - Director Stuart Balfour, Business Development Harry Haslam, Admin Officer Carly Sutherland, Logistics Co-ordinator Jakki Grant. Front Row - Ops Director Margaret Roberts, Chair Drew Ratter, Managing Director Maree Hay.

Shetlanders have always had a 'mak do an mend' philosophy, even before recycling was a thing. Islands communities often have to make the best of the resources available to them, and back in 2007 when the NCDC community polytunnel project was developed, waste pipe from the aquaculture industry was the obvious material of choice to create the hoops.

We estimate that we have now recycled enough pipe to reach from one end of Shetland to the other - that's 75 miles! Shetland crofters play a key part in our reuse and recycling practices too. They kindly bring us their empty plastic sheep mineral buckets, which we then clean up and use to dispatch the ironmongery and screws for each Polycrub kit. The buckets make super peerie planters for the new Polycrubber receiving the kit too. Win, win, win!
